High altitude vs. wilderness

High altitude: crucible for change

The Everest Academy operates our elite on-mountain high altitude experiences in the Nepal Himalaya because it is demanding, memorable and allows participants to work undistracted. It provides a unique crucible for change.

High altitude is the ideal location for the on-mountain part of our programs. Our experience demonstrates that behavioural transformation is more likely to be triggered in the Nepal Himalaya above 3800m than at or near sea level in almost any other place on earth.

A high altitude environment demands mental clarity and physical and emotional commitment that fit naturally with our leadership syllabus. The Himalaya is the world’s most remarkable high altitude environment; its majesty, history and culture give added potency. The combination is powerful.

Other reasons we have selected the high altitude Himalayan environment for our programs are that despite being physically challenging, it is reasonably accessible and can be kept safe.

The risk of altitude illness is typically small and with the right procedures in place can be well managed. We follow procedures that reflect best mountaineering practice to largely eliminate the incidence of altitude illness and to respond effectively when it occurs. Research supports our approach.

Our high altitude programs are suitable for any adult of moderate fitness and can be tailored to be made more demanding.

Wilderness: undistracted, demanding and accessible

We operate our entry-level and standard on-mountain experiences in wilderness areas, such as Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain / Lake St Clair National Park. This is because they offer many of the same benefits, but with shorter durations. These environments are also demanding, memorable and allow participants to work undistracted.

Wilderness areas are the ideal location for the on-mountain part of our programs for clients who want a high impact experience, but can only afford several days away from their workplace. Behavioural transformation can be triggered during these experiences, provided the pre and post sessions are kept highly proximate.

A high altitude environment demands mental clarity and physical and emotional commitment that fit naturally with our leadership syllabus. An additional benefit of our wilderness programs – relative to our high altitude programs – is that participants must learn to carry and organise all their own equipment: this provides lessons in self management.

Our wilderness programs are suitable for anyone of moderate fitness and can also be tailored to be made more demanding.
